Saturation and tone EQ land after the first compressor because they respond best to a stable input. Feed saturation an uneven signal and the loud words distort while the quiet ones stay flat. The final limiter sits last as a safety net, not as a second mixer. If it is pulling more than two or three decibels, something earlier in the chain is not doing its job.
How Do You Build Reverb and Delay Sends Instead of Insert Effects?
Pick two empty inserts to the right of your vocal tracks and name them VERB and DELAY. Load Fruity Reeverb 2 on one and Fruity Delay 3 on the other, then set the wet and dry balance on each plugin to fully wet. These are returns, so they should only ever produce the effect, never the source.
Now the part most people miss. Select your lead vocal insert, then look at the small triangle arrows underneath each of the other mixer tracks. Clicking the arrow under VERB creates a send from the lead vocal to that return and gives you a level knob for it. Do the same for DELAY, then repeat for doubles and ad-libs. Choosing Pre-Fader or Post-Fader Sends
Right-clicking a send knob lets you switch that send between pre and post fader. What Does a VOX BUS Do for Your FL Studio Vocal Chain?
Name another insert VOX BUS. Select your lead vocal, right-click the arrow underneath VOX BUS, and choose route to this track only. That disconnects the vocal from the master and sends it exclusively into the bus. Do the same for doubles, ad-libs, and both effect returns. Everything vocal now arrives at one place before it reaches the master.
On that bus, go light. Two to three decibels of gentle compression with a slow attack and a medium release, one broad tone EQ move, and that is usually the whole job. The bus is not where you fix problems, it is where separate parts start sounding like one performance. Parallel Compression Without a Second Chain
Add one more insert named SMASH, send your lead vocal to it, and load a compressor set aggressively: high ratio, fast attack, eight to ten decibels of reduction. Even a correctly ordered chain can fall apart in practice, and it usually fails for one of three reasons. None of them are plugin choices.
Recording Too Hot Into the First Plugin
Producers record hot, hit the first insert plugin at close to zero decibels full scale, then wonder why the compressor clamps down on everything equally. Trim the input so the vocal peaks somewhere around minus twelve to minus six decibels before it reaches the first plugin, and every processor downstream suddenly has room to work.
Orphaned Ad-Lib and Double Tracks
You build a careful FL Studio vocal chain around the lead, then record ad-libs onto a fresh insert that routes straight to the master. It bypasses the bus, misses the shared reverb, and sits in a completely different space from everything else. Before you start mixing, click through every vocal insert and confirm where each one is actually routed.
Doing the Same Job Twice
If the insert compressor already caught the peaks, the bus compressor has nothing left to glue and simply squashes what arrives.
